The meerkat spends the hottest period of the day lying in the shade of plants or resting in their burrows which are much cooler then the surface of the ground, and this helps them not to loose water from dehydration. The burrow systems are roughly two metres deep, and remain at a comfortable temperature throughout the year.
Many animals who live under harsh climatic conditions are fossorial or spend part of their lives underground in burrows.

Usually there are multiple guards up at any time, the larger the group is the more often different animals stand up on guard. This is called basic vigilance behaviour and all animals will stand up on guard to scan the area for danger.
Visibility determined by habitat type is a major influencing factor regarding how far apart different animals in a group of meerkats will be foraging, and the further they are apart the more guards will be active.

Wild meerkats / suricates have a gestation period of around ten and a half to eleven weeks.
Usually the dominant female will evict subordinate females from the group when she is in oestrus. She will allow them back into the group once she has given birth.
Usually these evicted females will not be allowed back into thier natal groups after the age of three years. They bcome a potential threat to the dominant female's breeding status then, as they become more experienced.

Recent taxonomic classifications:
There now appear to be 37 recognised species of mongooses (with the meerkat included) in the world. The latest species to my knowledge is Herpestes palustris.
The information in this article is not exact, as there are many "grey" areas in mongoose taxonomy it seems.

The closest answer I can trace for when meerkats were discovered and by whom is from a sentence in the book "The mammals of the Southern African Subregion" by J. D. Skinner and R. H. N Smithers.
The scientific name given of Suricata suricatta is attributed to "Schreber, 1776" this is the earliest record I have been able to locate.

In wild meerkat populations from birth to three months, meerkats are considered to be pups. They make specific begging calls that fade away as they mature and are weaned from their mothers milk.
They become juveniles or teenagers from three months to six months. The meerkats are still largely unsuccessful at finding their own food, but almost never try and beg for food. Captive meerkats never grow up however, and always beg for food...

What constitutes an amazing opportunity for research? Locating meerkats/ suricates in a previously unrecorded area of their distribution range in the world.
That is correct, not only is this subspecies of meerkat not even shown on any distribution map in the entire world to occur at Meerkat Magic, this subspecies has never even been studied before in science!
