Submitted by Grant on Friday, July 31 @ 22:23:58 UTC July 2015: Many new images have been added to The Meerkat Magic Valley Reserve Riverine Ecology taken over June 2015 at The Meerkat Magic Valley Reserve of The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project gallery, including views, fauna and flora: Termites that wild meerkats eat as part of their primarily insectivorous diet and a toxic hairy caterpillar and an escape burrow showing how the interior is dry after rain in The Meerkat Magic Valley Reserve of The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project- home to the Ungulungu meerkats and Tsebokolodi yellow mongooses.
All the species of fauna and flora no matter their size are protected by The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project in The Meerkat Magic Valley Reserve, the home of The Ungulungu wild and free meerkats and The Tsebokolodi wild and free yellow mongooses.
Every reserve protected species here is an essential part of the ecology that provides a home to the meerkat and many other better known or larger species.
All these reserve species are simply trying to make a living, just like the rest of us. However soo many species are not even considered in the media due to their size or lack of popularity - these reserve albums are here to create an awareness of some of the lesser known species in the meerkats habitat.

June 2015 VIDEO: Camouflaged frog in The Meerkat Magic Valley Reserve
Submitted by Grant on Tuesday, June 30 @ 23:38:15 UTC A camouflaged frog in The Meerkat Magic Valley Reserve - cryptic amphibian of The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project.
Observations from the personal film archives of Grant M. Mc Ilrath - A.K.A - The Meerkat Man from The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project in The Meerkat Magic Valley Reserve which forms the territory of The Ungulungu Wild and Free meerkat / meerkats / suricate / suricates range and The Tsebokolodi Yellow Mongooses Cynictis penicillata.
Although it is rare for the meerkat to eat frogs and toads, they occasionally dig them out of muddy areas where the amphibians have taken refuge in the drier months when water has dried up.

Submitted by Grant on Sunday, May 24 @ 20:05:23 UTC A Cape Cobra snake catches a toad - (Naja nivea) in The Meerkat Magic Valley Reserve.
Observations from the personal film archives of Grant M. Mc Ilrath - A.K.A - The Meerkat Man from The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project in The Meerkat Magic Valley Reserve which forms the territory of The Ungulungu Wild and Free meerkat / meerkats / suricate / suricates range.
I was very fortunate to see the Cape Cobra - Naja nivea moving back into a deep dried out crevice in the mud after ambushing and capturing an unfortunate toad.
Although the Cape cobra is a highly venomous snake with neurotoxic venom, it is seldom aggressive towards humans which are of course not it's prey - unless it is provoked.
I have encountered this beautiful reptile countless times when walking with wild meerkats and other wildlife - since they always detect snake scent.
The Cape Cobra is one of the most dangerous of all meerkat predators as it will hunt them during the day and at night - as it can follow them into their burrows when they are asleep.
Even though meerkats have the ability to kill and eat snakes, since the meerkat does not have any carnassial teeth for tearing meat, they rather try and avoid these snakes when they have investigated them - after a brief encounter the meerkats will almost always leave the snake and move away.
I often walk past the area where the Cobra was seen, and I have never noticed it there before - now that I know it lives there I have seen it often.
Many snakes are killed by people, even though the snake is often totally harmless and even if it is venomous it is seldom intentionally around humans in my experience.
I discovered yet again that most snakes are seldom seen, even though they are around us unless they want to be seen as a defensive reaction for their own protection if we intrude into their space.
