The shy 5
these animals are rarely seen
to spot them your senses have to be keen
they run and hide when we approach
people often track these animals to poach
they sell their quills and shoot them dead
they are vermin it is said
this is not true
if only people knew

The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project wishes to thank Lynda Yates from Australia, one of our international Meerkat Friendly Supporters who visited us on a morning Sunrise Tour on the 03 June 2007 for her sharing of the following informaiton:
Lynda Yates -mentioned an innovation in Australia known as Roo Shoo - a brilliant product that warns Kangaroo's of approaching vehicles so that they get out of the way! Other countries could really learn by this outstanding example of reductions in road kills by innovative technology!!! - Comment by Grant M. Mc Ilrath - A.K.A - The Meerkat Man.

FOR THE LOVE OF WILDLIFE by Chris Mercer and Beverley Pervan.
A brief excerpt from this very special must have book:
"This is the true story of the Harnas Lion Farm in Namibia and of the extraordinary sacrifices and experiences which the Van de Merwe family has undergone to save from persecution hundreds of wild animals including forty lions, leopards and cheetah. A story of a young girl and her beloved lion, Mufasa, and the tragedy which can tear a family apart. The tale of Bagheera the crippled cheetah who captured peoples' hearts.
A rich tapestry woven through with death, danger, mistakes and rescues. It is an eloquent protest against the ongoing loss of wild habitat and destruction of wildlife in Southern Africa."

THE SHY 5: Thought provoking verses about the plight of the procupine |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
Submitted by Grant on Wednesday, August 23 @ 14:13:50 CEST
The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project strongly believes in active conservation, and by this statement we believe in providing the facts from research findings to anybody. We do not believe in euphemistically disguising the facts of any findings to perhaps please a certain audience, therefore skewing the data with observer bias.
Each individual of course is always welcome to their view. But we will not turn our backs on problems that are very clearly shown by research, to appease those who do not like to know the facts because they may feel uncomfortable with them for whatever reason.
As a professional conservationist and research biologist, Grant M. Mc Ilrath- A.K.A - The Meerkat Man (Press the name for more information...) I feel that not revealing facts of concern is not only dishonest, it is also unethical. Often impacts that can be predicted and managed may be overlooked for political or economic reasons, or other reasons, but they should not be ignored.
Please cast your vote in this article...

Many people have been fortunate enough to visit South Africa and see our magnificent Big 5!
But how many people, have ever seen the Shy 5? Not the little 5, the SHY 5!
The Meerkat Magic Project is based on a philosophy of working with wildlife and people and natural resources, and is not restricted to Wild meerkats alone, but rather covers many species. The Meerkat Magic Project is especially interested in and passionate about promoting an understanding of our smaller and often very misunderstood naturally occuring self regulating wildlife!

THE SHY 5: Is aardvark digging bothering you? |

After a recent question regarding hole digging in farm structures, like dam walls by the aardvark (Orycteropus afer), which is grouped as one of THE SHY 5 (press here to read more about them) by The Meerkat Magic Project, I decided to include a reply to this question to help alleviate the digging situation, or frustration that some land owners experience due to this natural habit of this very shy mythical aardvark creature.

Many people have seen this shy animal, bat -eared fox/ bakoorvos/ bakoorjakkals (Otocyon megalotis), which is grouped as one of THE SHY 5 (press here to read more about them) by The Meerkat Magic Project.
Tragically not that many people have seen LIVING bat- eared foxes, as often these animals are DELIBERATELY not avoided on roads, and knocked down and killed by ignorant human drivers.

THE SHY 5: Confusion leading to the blame of the harmless aardwolf! |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
Submitted by Grant on Saturday, August 06 @ 13:37:59 CEST
When I first began working in the Kalahari in the Northern Cape in 1993, I was horrified and perplexed by stories of "Weerwolf" eating farm stock in the area! I was very confused, and I thought "Where wolves" are mythical beasts resulting from Lycanthropy- what a ridiculous notion that they are actually living in this area!
Well, I was determined to get the truth of this naming situation and resulting confusion and blame out in the open. As it transpired, "Weer wolf" did not actually mean what I thought it did- (what a relief!), but in fact translated to weather wolf- or thunder wolf. This was a common name given to the incredibly shy animal, the aardwolf/ maanhaarjakkals (Proteles cristatus), which is grouped as one of THE SHY 5 (press here to read more about them) by The Meerkat Magic Project.

Submitted by Grant on Sunday, July 17 @ 21:17:43 CEST
Have you ever stopped and wondered where all the porcupine quills that are used in so many shops, and accommodation establishments actually come from?
Of course, they originate from the porcupine (Hystrix africaeaustralis), which is grouped as one of THE SHY 5 (press here to read more about them) by The Meerkat Magic Project.
But HOW do these quills just miraculously end up in curio shops, and other places...?

THE SHY 5: Should captive meerkats be bred? Released? Traded? |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
Submitted by Grant on Friday, June 24 @ 15:09:36 CEST
After countless thousands of questions about captive and wild meerkats / suricates I have decided to include yet another article on this critical topic, to address certain questions that I keep receiving.
I believe captive meerkats / suricates should not be bred in captivity, and should never be released, they should also be desexed and only kept in captivity to educate visitors about why captive meerkats / suricates should not be kept as pets- this entire article is the view of Grant M. Mc Ilrath from The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project.
I have been researching wild meerkats / suricates full time in the wilderness since 1993 and have done many captive meerkat observations. I have some very outspoken and controversial points that I would like to elaborate on in this investigation of the above topics...

The Wild Meerkat / Suricate Conservation Foundation (T.W.M.C.F) is a concept for raising funds to combat the illicit trade of meerkats / suricates in the pet industry. This is the current main focus that The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project is establishing coupled with the growing habitat conservation with local subsidised landowners who receive commissions from Observe and Conserve Eco-tourism and Agri - tourism on their properties.
In the future the Fund will not only spread the continued awareness of why meerkats / suricates should not be kept as pets, there will also be various sponsorship and donor categories available to you to become actively involved as members who support this cause. The yellow mongoose (Cynictis penicillata) is a very misunderstood animal, as are many when information is not readily available on them and their benefits in the environment in which they play a critical role!
I have observed yellow mongoose in different habitats in South Africa and I have always found them to be fascinating to watch. Zoë E. Balmforth has obtained her PhD from many years of study of this amazing animal, and I was fortunate enough to be part of her research study and learn more intimate details about the yellow.

The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project only works with Wild and Free meerkat / suricate populations that occur naturally in our styd areas in The Meerkat Magic Valley around Oudtshoorn Western Cape South Africa.
There is always a reason for "small game" like this not being in an area, and we do not believe in
introducing them to areas where they do not occur (or even where they do occur...), because, unlike other larger game species that are easy to establish and that may have been hunted
out in an area...

Meerkats are often falsely accused:
Meerkats primarily eat invertebrates like insects and scorpions, spiders and also small vertebrates like lizards and skinks and occasionally small snakes. The main reason for this being their primary diet is because they do not have carnasial teeth (teeth designed for cutting meat).
