Submitted by grant on Monday, February 22 @ 20:00:10 CET
As a research biologist and Nature Conservationist I often stare in complete wonder at the natural world around me, and often feel inspired to try and capture the essence of what I experience, by painting it in words.
The following verses materialized in my mind whilst watching the unenviable fate of a certain famous beetle species and the Wild and Free meerkats / suricates of The Ungulungu group on my reserve study sites of The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project Oudtshoorn Western Cape South Africa...
Run run tok tokkie run run! By Grant M. Mc Ilrath - A.K.A - The Meerkat Man

Tok tok tok tok
Who goes there?
Tok tok tok tok
Little shiny beetle have a care...

A Weasel & Hare poem by Erna van der Linden Velp, The Netherlands
On a clear and frosty winter-day
in the shelter of Old House at Bay
Weasel and Hare heard The News
told by a servant to butcher Bews
‘Cape Journal’ in many a hand
jolly tiding spread over the land
The servant prepared a list of food
for celebration in Scottish mood.

Nature Stories: Donkey and Elephant by Erna van der Linden Velp, The Netherlands |

Submitted by Grant on Tuesday, December 01 @ 09:57:14 CET
To be honest: this is an incredible story. The event took place a long time ago, in the summer of the year 1938.
On Scheveningen beach, a donkey and an elephant enjoyed a fine day. Holding an ice cream in the one, a lemonade in the other foreleg. How on earth did they arrive there? Listen . . .
Donkey and Elephant lived in Artis, the Amsterdam Zoo. In 1938, the Zoo celebrated its foundation, one hundred years ago.

This poem was published in Departing Dawn as part of a competition. About the cruel vivisection trade, and written in memory of the eight wild caught baboons which were rescued from the NCOH where they'd spent 10 years in in-door cages.
The poem was written in memory of the two baboons from the NCOH who did not make it to freedom. They were too weak and could
not accompany the other six of their buddies. They were wild caught and sat in these tiny cages for up to ten years.
SAAV negotiated their freedom and then they went up to Rita Miljo's baboon sanctuary at Phalaborwa.

Margie Walker and Dick Walker are Meerkat Friendly Supporters and Meerkat Veterans who visited The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project in The Meerkat Magic Valley of Oudtshoorn, Western Cape of South Africa on the 16th October 2008 on a morning Sunrise Tour and Walked With Wildlife with The Ungulungu wild meerkat / suricate group.
It was a great pleasure to meet you both - Margie Walker and Dick Walker - thank you for this beautiful poem! (Comment from Grant M. Mc Ilrath - A.K.A - The Meerkat Man / The Meerkat Magic Man).
Ode to the Mc Ilrath's: - by Margie Walker - October 2008
We're off to meet the folk in the Klein Karoo,
People as ordinary as me and you.
Meet Grant 'Mac' - THE MEERKAT MAN
He can communicate if anyone can
With clicks and purrs and even the odd whistle
He makes the meerkat family's fur quite bristle.
'L.J.' is his loving wife
Crossed his path - then wed for life!

November 2007
Dinner for two in The Veld near Oudtshoorn.
‘Tell me, what is wrong with this winter-food?’
Meerkat asked friend O’Hare – in fact his best.
For many an hour he in his field-kitchen stood
And cooked a fine dinner: true amical geste.

The Wild Herd
Their hooves echo through the valley like thunder
They conjure thoughts of awe and wonder
Wild spirits running free
Like all animals should be
They dart and turn, here and there
You can't help but stop and stare
Young and old alike they run
They seem to always be having fun

Understanding
people just don't seem to understand
how what we do affects the land
we slash and burn and farm and build
we don't think how many small lives are killed
we think we rule our fellow creatures
this is one of human kinds worst features
we never stop to look and think
and pull back creatures from the brink

The shy 5
these animals are rarely seen
to spot them your senses have to be keen
they run and hide when we approach
people often track these animals to poach
they sell their quills and shoot them dead
they are vermin it is said
this is not true
if only people knew

Porcupine, porcupine, where is your voice?
Have you no cry that we can hear?
Is there no one to heed your plight?

(Please do note that the use of anthropomorphic statements (human characterisitcs attributed to animals) is deliberate for this article, and is of course meant to be non-scientific for this rendition of a Sunrise Tour story from the past).
Tickling, caressing weaves of gold creep creep slowly towards where I stand in The Meerkat Magic Valley of The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project Oudtshoorn Western Cape South Africa, it is 5 am in the morning outside one of the many sleeping burrows in the over 11 kilometre home range of Wild and Free meerkat / suricate Group: Ungulungu, and I am giving a morning Sunrise Tour to our special Meerkat Conservation Friendly guests from Britain and Germany, who are sitting expectantly and quietly motionless on some meerkat / sruciate scent marked garden chairs nearby...
Before the first "weather forecaster" meerkat / suricate head pops up to have a look around and decide if it is even worth waking up, a very strange two legged primitive reptile like creature begins to emerge from some karoo gwari bushes (Euclea undulata) to the west.

The setting is St. Lucia, on the eastern coastline of Natal in South Africa, the area is a lovely quiet village near a large estuary.
It was around seven at night, and I had a craving, I could not wait any longer, I just had to walk the few kilometres to town to get a snack.
It was during those fabulous extended school holidays, so lovely and warm, and the insects and bush babys were singing their songs, to the embracing inky murk of the dense vegetation. Glowing-ember fire flies sprinkled the vegetation like fairy lights on a tree.
