General Information: How are meerkats adapted to harsh climates?! |

The meerkat spends the hottest period of the day lying in the shade of plants or resting in their burrows which are much cooler then the surface of the ground, and this helps them not to loose water from dehydration. The burrow systems are roughly two metres deep, and remain at a comfortable temperature throughout the year.
Many animals who live under harsh climatic conditions are fossorial or spend part of their lives underground in burrows.

General Information: Wild meerkat guarding behaviour |

Usually there are multiple guards up at any time, the larger the group is the more often different animals stand up on guard. This is called basic vigilance behaviour and all animals will stand up on guard to scan the area for danger.
Visibility determined by habitat type is a major influencing factor regarding how far apart different animals in a group of meerkats will be foraging, and the further they are apart the more guards will be active.
