The shy 5
these animals are rarely seen
to spot them your senses have to be keen
they run and hide when we approach
people often track these animals to poach
they sell their quills and shoot them dead
they are vermin it is said
this is not true
if only people knew

Many people have been fortunate enough to visit South Africa and see our magnificent Big 5!
But how many people, have ever seen the Shy 5? Not the little 5, the SHY 5!
The Meerkat Magic Project is based on a philosophy of working with wildlife and people and natural resources, and is not restricted to Wild meerkats alone, but rather covers many species. The Meerkat Magic Project is especially interested in and passionate about promoting an understanding of our smaller and often very misunderstood naturally occuring self regulating wildlife!

THE SHY 5: Is aardvark digging bothering you? |

Submitted by Grant on Saturday, August 06 @ 13:48:13 CEST
After a recent question regarding hole digging in farm structures, like dam walls by the aardvark (Orycteropus afer), which is grouped as one of THE SHY 5 (press here to read more about them) by The Meerkat Magic Project, I decided to include a reply to this question to help alleviate the digging situation, or frustration that some land owners experience due to this natural habit of this very shy mythical aardvark creature.

Many people have seen this shy animal, bat -eared fox/ bakoorvos/ bakoorjakkals (Otocyon megalotis), which is grouped as one of THE SHY 5 (press here to read more about them) by The Meerkat Magic Project.
Tragically not that many people have seen LIVING bat- eared foxes, as often these animals are DELIBERATELY not avoided on roads, and knocked down and killed by ignorant human drivers.

THE SHY 5: Confusion leading to the blame of the harmless aardwolf! |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
Submitted by Grant on Saturday, August 06 @ 13:37:59 CEST
When I first began working in the Kalahari in the Northern Cape in 1993, I was horrified and perplexed by stories of "Weerwolf" eating farm stock in the area! I was very confused, and I thought "Where wolves" are mythical beasts resulting from Lycanthropy- what a ridiculous notion that they are actually living in this area!
Well, I was determined to get the truth of this naming situation and resulting confusion and blame out in the open. As it transpired, "Weer wolf" did not actually mean what I thought it did- (what a relief!), but in fact translated to weather wolf- or thunder wolf. This was a common name given to the incredibly shy animal, the aardwolf/ maanhaarjakkals (Proteles cristatus), which is grouped as one of THE SHY 5 (press here to read more about them) by The Meerkat Magic Project.

THE SHY 5: Where do all the porcupine quills come from?! |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
Submitted by Grant on Sunday, July 17 @ 21:17:43 CEST
Have you ever stopped and wondered where all the porcupine quills that are used in so many shops, and accommodation establishments actually come from?
Of course, they originate from the porcupine (Hystrix africaeaustralis), which is grouped as one of THE SHY 5 (press here to read more about them) by The Meerkat Magic Project.
But HOW do these quills just miraculously end up in curio shops, and other places...?

THE SHY 5: Should captive meerkats be bred? Released? Traded? |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
Submitted by Grant on Friday, June 24 @ 15:09:36 CEST
After countless thousands of questions about captive and wild meerkats / suricates I have decided to include yet another article on this critical topic, to address certain questions that I keep receiving.
I believe captive meerkats / suricates should not be bred in captivity, and should never be released, they should also be desexed and only kept in captivity to educate visitors about why captive meerkats / suricates should not be kept as pets- this entire article is the view of Grant M. Mc Ilrath from The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project.
I have been researching wild meerkats / suricates full time in the wilderness since 1993 and have done many captive meerkat observations. I have some very outspoken and controversial points that I would like to elaborate on in this investigation of the above topics...

The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project only works with Wild and Free meerkat / suricate populations that occur naturally in our styd areas in The Meerkat Magic Valley around Oudtshoorn Western Cape South Africa.
There is always a reason for "small game" like this not being in an area, and we do not believe in
introducing them to areas where they do not occur (or even where they do occur...), because, unlike other larger game species that are easy to establish and that may have been hunted
out in an area...

The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project directly conserves wild meerkat / suricate populations and is completely against the exploitation of wildlife and keeping meerkats / suricates as pets, selling them or abusing them in anyway.
The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project does not support the unsustainable and harmful commercial trade of wild meerkats. Or capturing of wild meerkats for pets. No tame meerkats / suricates are worked with at The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project!

Meerkats are often falsely accused:
Meerkats primarily eat invertebrates like insects and scorpions, spiders and also small vertebrates like lizards and skinks and occasionally small snakes. The main reason for this being their primary diet is because they do not have carnasial teeth (teeth designed for cutting meat).
