IT IS ILLEGAL to keep meerkats / suricates as pets in South Africa, with large associated fines as they are classified as wildlife, sadly many selfish and ignorant people are still doing this - and when the demand is there so is the supply - tragic!
The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project does not support the unsustainable and harmful commercial trade of wild meerkats / suricates. Or capturing of wild meerkats / suricates for pets. None of the study animals at The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project have ever been fed, captured or handled in any way.
The animals at The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project do not have hair cuts that can interfere with their heat regulation / thermoregulation, or other artificial markings that can break up their camouflage and give their location away to predators, and none of the study animals have been fitted with telemetry / transmitters / radio collars that could get caught in vegetation and make the animal more obvious to predators, and need to have the animal captured and handled for this.
The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project is a behavioural observation and applied conservation ecology open source research project, focussing on conserving wildlife habitat by investigating alternative land usage and sustainable practices in highly sensitive ecosystems.
This is primarily achieved through generating funds for our work by Observe and Conserve Eco- Tourism and Agri - Tourism which assists in subsidising land owners, so that farming is no longer the only source of income in highly sensitive eco- systems that occur on our Study Sites. With the removal of large quantities of farm stock, which can cause trampling of the environment, conservation of naturally occurring resources is sustainably achieved through zonation of properties.

No tame or previously captured or ever released from captivity meerkats / suricates are worked with at The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project!The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project does NOT feed or protect wild meerkat / suricate populations from predation at all, and wild meerkats / suricates treat the observers here as objects that they trust due to highly selective ethical neuro linguistic programming habituation techniques that require many years to implement and constant care to maintain, this selective trust from wildlife.
This allows the collection of very accurate unbiased by the observer, data on natural wildlife behaviour. It would be unethical to interfere with the predation process, this is not a zoo environment, but a natural wild setting.

On Scheveningen beach, a donkey and an elephant enjoyed a fine day. Holding an ice cream in the one, a lemonade in the other foreleg. How on earth did they arrive there? Listen . . .
Donkey and Elephant lived in Artis, the Amsterdam Zoo. In 1938, the Zoo celebrated its foundation, one hundred years ago.

This poem was published in Departing Dawn as part of a competition. About the cruel vivisection trade, and written in memory of the eight wild caught baboons which were rescued from the NCOH where they'd spent 10 years in in-door cages.
The poem was written in memory of the two baboons from the NCOH who did not make it to freedom. They were too weak and could
not accompany the other six of their buddies. They were wild caught and sat in these tiny cages for up to ten years.
SAAV negotiated their freedom and then they went up to Rita Miljo's baboon sanctuary at Phalaborwa.

If you would love to have a working holiday experience watching wild meerkats / suricates and other wildlife on our reserves (you do not need any particular biological experience for this application) and wish to gain a unique insight into our research and conservation work then apply today. Accommodation at the Meerkat Mansion is currently available on a first apply and approval basis for a single or couple sharing.
These positions are for Research and Conservation and Education methodology experience in the field - or to experience something unique while on a working holiday. These limited positions are for assistants who would pay for their accommodation on The Study Areas, Tracker salaries, Experience, Equipment and various costs are quoted with an application determined by the duration of the visit. Jabulani (Zulu for Joy) is still going strong, and so is Nyathi (Zulu for Buffalo) the dominant male.
Since our last update in 2007, four babies emerged in the July 2007 litter - three survived after emerging on the 14th August 2007.
On the 12th October 2007 Jabulani gave birth again, and on the 04th November 2007 four babies emerged, three survived.
On the 29th December 2007 Jabulani gave birth again, her third litter for 2007, and on the 21st January 2008 five babies emerged. Four have survived.
